Our first story we read this year is about a boy and his dog going on a camping trip. We had a great time in class learning about all the things you can do, see, and what to bring when you go camping.
First we watched this adorable video of Peppa Pig going on a family campout. I had never heard of Peppa Pig before and was pleasantly surprised when some of the students could tell us what was going to happen because they had seen it before!

Then we read our story about Henry and Mudge and used this idea map to list the things to bring (cosas que traer), things to see (cosas que ver), and things to do (cosas que hacer).
Here are some key words we used from the reading that you can reinforce at home:
tienda-tent
hoguera-campfire
cascada-waterfall
arco iris-rainbow
mochila-backpack
hacha-axe
estrellas-stars
caminata-hike
Our final project was a writing activity using our Lego Story Starters kit. We used the photos we received from students as a starting point to create our own camping scenes, and then built them with Legos! Thank you to everyone who sent photos, the students loved seeing pictures of each other in the outdoors! After students made their camping scenes I took photos of them and they wrote their own camping stories about their scene. We were having so much fun, I honestly think this was the first time I have ever had students groan when it was time for lunch because they wanted to keep working!
We are still at the beginning stages of writing, but it was great to see how much they were able to produce after just the first month of school! If we are starting at this point I am sure they will do great things throughout the year!
Here are the photos of their Lego scenes, I hope you enjoy them as much as I do! They sure are creative kids :).
